Transition from primary school to secondary school can be challenging and it’s not unusual for students to experience minor difficulties in their development. Using standard English confidently in written and spoken communications, as well as reading fluently for understanding, is critical as students approach the GCSE years. Whether it is a more focussed approach to grammar, spelling, comprehension, written expression or building vocabulary, I am here to help fill any gaps you feel your child may have. Plugging gaps now will mean your child is well-prepared for the GCSE years ahead.
Students are expected to have a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. Reading and engaging with literature is a key feature of English at this age and one of my priorities is to ensure that my students develop higher-order reading and critical thinking skills so that their written work demonstrates a clear, considered, personal response. In addition, developing organisational skills, identifying the necessary key study skills and understanding exam technique, really come to the fore at this level. Ensuring that these skills are in place contributes hugely to a student’s self-confidence.
As students embark on A level/IB, examiners are looking for independent thinking communicated in a coherent and convincing argument. In addition, the ability to analyse sophisticated ideas and the ways in which they are presented, as well as synthesising large and complex texts, can make this a challenging leap from GCSE. Whether it is helping a student to fully engage with a text or understand how to create a ‘thesis’ style of writing, I have experience of identifying the specific areas that need strengthening and working with the student to strengthen skills.
Developing confidence and technique is especially critical at this age when young students are faced with challenging exams. My approach uses a number of strategies, from games, sample test questions, past papers with time management and exam techniques as well as quizzing. I always take the time to understand the motivation and learning style of my young students and I have a 100% success rate in this area.
