French can be a challenging exam to revise for. Not only the four different areas that students need to be on top of (Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing) but also the considerable grammar and niche vocabulary that they need to know by heart. In fact, in 2019 Ofqual found that “French (and German) appear to be consistently harder than other GCSE subjects” and they are working to adjust grading standards above Grade 4.
In the meantime, there is no escape from the considerable learning by heart that students will need to do. However, there are a number of different techniques that I use to help with more effective learning. We go through all of the basic grammar that students need to know, highlighting rules, patterns, exceptions as well as putting these into workable and realistic linguistic structures.
Occasionally the challenge for students is not having adequate notes on the key grammar points and vocabulary. I always work to put together solid and effective resources that will form the basis of their understanding and subsequent revision. In this way they will enter their exams with a renewed confidence.

The leap from GCSE French to A level is significant. It is essential that students start with a thorough grounding in the grammar required for GCSE and that they are ready to hit the ground running having eliminated any weak areas.
If a student needs additional support then I will work with them to identify and master all of the grammar points that are critical to their performance. We do this with structured practice as well as working through fiction and non-fiction texts to put grammar in context and to fully understand how it works.
For the first time students will be studying literature and film in French. Both are particular loves of mine: French film has played and continues to play such a meaningful role in the history of global cinema, and their literature has often been ahead of the curve, influencing many Anglo-Saxon writers. If students are finding it challenging to master the requirements in this area of the course, then my passion and enthusiasm will help them to get ‘under the skin’ of these topics and prepare fully for the exam.

I can offer topical help on whatever areas you would like. Ordering food in a restaurant? Pas de problème! Want to be able to talk with hotel staff? C’est facile! I will work with you to establish the areas you’d like to improve, give you sample conversations and lots of spoken practice across all of the family. If you prefer, we can do this online (Zoom, for example) is that is easier for you.
